Superior Canal Dehiscence (SCD) syndrome is a rare condition that occurs when there is an opening in the bone that covers the superior semicircular canal in the inner ear. SCD syndrome can cause balance and hearing problems. This model also shows a tympanic membrane perforation. Tympanic perforation means there is a hole or tear in the tympanic membrane (eardrum). Tympanic membrane perforations often heal without treatment; however, they sometimes require surgical repair.
